(DALLAS, TX - 7/16/2022) The National Association of Muslim Lawyers (NAML), the oldest and largest professional association of Muslim lawyers, judges and legal professionals in the United States, today joined calls for the Biden Administration to demand the immediate release of U.S. citizen, Virginia attorney Asim Ghafoor, who was detained by the United Arab Emirates authorities during a stopover in the country.

Ghafoor is a longtime attorney in Virginia who serves on the board of Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), the organization founded by Jamal Khashoggi. Ghafoor once represented the slain Washington Post columnist, as well as his fiancé.

In a statement, NAML President Asad Rahman, Esq. said:

"On behalf of the National Association of Muslim Lawyers, we call on President Biden and the Administration to immediately demand the release of our colleague and friend, Asim Ghafoor and do everything in their power to ensure he comes home promptly and safely. Asim is a widely respected attorney and human rights activist who has represented the best of the legal profession while advocating for justice here and abroad. Our nation must stand up for all American citizens unjustly detained overseas, including Asim Ghafoor."

NAML further urges its members and all concerned citizens to contact their elected Congressional representatives and urge them to help secure an expeditious and safe release of Mr. Ghafoor.
