NAML Congratulates Ajmel Quereshi on Historic Appointment as U.S. Magistrate Judge in Maryland

(WASHINGTON, DC - 3/10/2022) The National Association of Muslim Lawyers (NAML) today congratulated attorney Ajmel Quereshi on his historic appointment as a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the District of Maryland. Quereshi, who currently serves as senior counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, is the first American Muslim appointed to serve as a federal judge in Maryland.

In a statement, NAML President Asad Rahman said:

"On behalf of NAML members across America, we congratulate attorney Ajmel Quereshi on this historic achievement. We are confident that Mr. Quereshi's wide-ranging expertise and unique experiences will enrich the federal judiciary. We are also hopeful that Mr. Quereshi's service will inspire more Muslim Americans to pursue careers in the law to advance justice for all people. We pray that Allah guides and protects Mr. Quereshi in his new role."

Quereshi, a graduate of Marquette University and the University of Minnesota Law School, has served as a federal clerk, an attorney at the ACLU of Maryland, a professor and clinic director at Howard University School of Law, a fellow at Harvard Law School, and most recently, senior counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

The U.S. District Court in Maryland has announced that Mr. Quereshi's official swearing-in is scheduled for April 18, 2022. Read his full biography on their website.
