NAML's Muslim Legal Journal Announces 2023 Editorial Staff

The Muslim Legal Journal, the digital news publication of the National Association of Muslim Lawyers (NAML), today introduced and congratulated its new leaders for the 2023 calendar year. The Journal’s new editorial team includes Editor-in-Chief Sanaa Ghanim, Managing Editor Hafsa Mansoor, Editor-at-Large Sarah El Ebiary, and Copy Editors Sherry Assi and Hamid Bazaraa.

"On behalf of the National Association of Muslim Lawyers, I congratulate and welcome the new editors of our Muslim Legal Journal," said NAML President Edward Ahmed Mitchell. "We are confident that Editor-in-Chief Sanaa Ghanim and her fellow edits will take the Journal to the next level in the coming year, God willing."

Founded in 2021, The Muslim Legal Journal is dedicated to highlighting the work of Muslim legal professionals, analyzing legal topics of relevance to the Muslim American community, and serving as a platform for diverse views about such legal topics. Legal professionals, academics law students, and any others interested in contributing to the Journal should submit story ideas and article submissions to muslimlegaljournal@naml.info.

Editor-in-Chief Sanaa Ghanim is a third-year law student at Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. She was one of six students in SMU Law’s class of 2023 selected to receive the Sumners Foundation scholarship, a full tuition scholarship plus stipend in recognition of academic achievement and commitment to civic duty. In law school, Sanaa serves as an Articles Editor for the International Law Review Association and was selected for publication in the journal during her 2L year. Sanaa worked as a Student Attorney in the SMU VanSickle Family Law Clinic where she advised her clients on divorce and child custody matters. Sanaa also worked as a Judicial Extern in the Northern District of Texas. During her 2L year, she also served as a Student Representative to the SMU Board of Trustees where she advised the Board on policies relating to student life at the University. Sanaa spent her 1L summer at Thompson & Knight (now Holland & Knight) and her 2L summer at Holland & Knight. After graduating from law school, Sanaa will join Holland & Knight as an associate in the Firm’s Dallas office.

Managing Editor Hafsa Mansoor is a litigation associate at White & Case where she works on complex commercial disputed at all stages of litigation while also maintaining a large pro bono practice focused on actualizing civil and human rights and advancing criminal justice reform. Hafsa has served as class counsel on multiple plaintiff-side civil rights class actions. In 2023, she will be clerking in the Southern District of New York. Hafsa graduated from Seton Hall Law Class where she graduated as valedictorian in 2020. During her time in law school, Hafsa served as a Center for Social Justice Scholar and also as a Postgraduate Fellow for Detained Immigrant Defense at the Seton Hall Law Immigrants' Rights/International Human Rights Clinic, where she represented detained immigrants in removal proceedings. Hafsa has written several academic publications on race and civil rights issues. She also is the co-founder of FirstGenJD, an online resource guide for first generation law students.

Editor-at-Large Sarah El Ebiary works at the Oregon Capitol helping to pass Legislation as Chief of Staff for a member of the House of Representatives. She is also the founder of New World Entrepreneur & Entertainment Law based in the Pacific Northwest, which provides intellectual property law and business services for creatives, non-profits, startups, and the entertainment community. She enjoys volunteering on the board of several non-profit organizations and is currently the Vice President and Co-founder of the Oregon Muslim Bar Association. Sarah has previously served as Managing Editor of the Muslim Legal Journal. As a balance to practicing law, Sarah is also a licensed yoga and meditation teacher, as well as a certified vegan chef.

Copy Editor Sherry Assi is a 1L at Boston College Law School. Sherry serves on the boards of the National Muslim Law Students Association and Boston College’s Middle Eastern Law Students Association. Sherry attended Clark University for undergraduate where she majored in political science and minored in management. Sherry also completed a concentration in law and society. Also while at Clark, Sherry took on a position as a research assistant, interned at the Massachusetts State House, and accepted admission to various honor societies. Outside of academics, Sherry enjoys completing fitness challenges as well as traveling around the world.

Copy Editor Hamid Bazaraa attends the University of Wisconsin Law School where he is involved in the Environmental Law Society and the Middle Eastern Law Students Association while also serving as an admitted student lawyer with the Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic. Hamid is a member of the Muslim Bar Association of Chicago and the National Association of Muslim Lawyers. Before attending law school, Hamid received undergraduate degrees in Global & International Studies and Political Science from Loyola University Chicago. During his time at Loyola, Hamid worked for various political campaigns and started his graphic design business. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, hiking, and spending time with his family.
